1 ここ／そこ／あそこ／どこ

Summary: here / there (near listener) / over there / where.

How it works: Use as place nouns. Add は and です as needed.

  • ここは ロビー です。
  • トイレは どこ ですか。

Form: ここ｜そこ｜あそこ｜どこ + です／ですか

  • そこは 受付うけつけ です。 — There (near you) is reception.
  • あそこは 食堂しょくどう です。 — Over there is the cafeteria.
  • ここは どこ ですか。 — Where are we?
Common mistakes: Confusing ここ (near speaker) with そこ (near listener).

2 こちら／そちら／あちら／どちら (polite)

How it works: Use in customer service or with strangers.

Form: こちら｜そちら｜あちら｜どちら + です／ですか

  • トイレは どちら ですか。 — Where is the restroom? (polite)
  • 会議室かいぎしつは そちら です。 — The meeting room is that way.
Common mistakes: Mixing どちら (“which way/which one (polite)”) with どこ (“where”).

  • 売り場うりばは ３階がい です。 — The department is on the 3rd floor.
Common mistakes: Forgetting は after the topic: トイレ どこ ですか → トイレは どこ ですか.

4 〜階／何階 (floors)

Summary: Use the counter 〜階かい (〜かい／〜がい) and 何階なんがい to ask floors.

How it works: Irregular readings: １階かい=いっかい, ３階がい=さんがい, ６階かい=ろっかい, ８階かい=はっかい, １０階かい=じゅっかい／じっかい. Basement: 地下ちか１階かい.

  • かばん売り場うりばは 何階なんがい ですか。 — What floor is the bag department on?
  • ３階がい です。 — 3rd floor.
  • レストランは 地下ちか１階かい です。 — The restaurant is on B1.

5 いくら／〜円えん (prices)

Summary: Ask price with いくら; state price with 〜円えん.

  • この 本ほん は いくら ですか。 — How much is this book?
  • ２５００円えん です。 — It’s 2,500 yen.
