4) 〜かねない — might well happen (risk warning)
Warns that a negative or serious result may occur. Stronger/more cautionary than simple “かもしれない”.
Form: V-ますstem + かねない Tone: formal caution.
その 発言 は 誤解 を 招 きかねない。
That remark could invite misunderstanding.
データを 直 修 するのは 信頼 を 損 ないかねない。
Directly editing data could damage trust.
Carelessness could lead to an accident.
5) 〜そうにない — unlikely to… (judging by appearance)
Say that something probably won’t happen, based on what you see/know now.
Form: V-ますstem + そうにない Common: 間に合いそうにない／売れそうにない／晴れそうにない

At this pace, we won’t make it for the opening.
今日は 客足 が 伸 びそうにない。

6) 〜っこない — absolutely no way (casual emphasis)
Strong spoken denial. Use in conversation, not formal writing.
Form: V-ますstem + っこない Tip: With verbs like 信じる, the potential form feels natural: 信じられっこない. 来る→来 っこない。
いまからじゃ 間 に合 いっこない。
There’s no way we’ll make it now.
そんな 話 、信 じられっこない。
There’s absolutely no way to believe that.
あいつは 来 っこないよ。
He’s not coming—no chance.
Quick contrasts & pitfalls
- 〜得る = objective “can happen”. Potential form (読める) = someone’s ability. 〜得ない is formal “cannot happen”.
