Learning Goals

• Say basic descriptions with A は Adjective です.
• Make polite negatives: い-adj → 〜くないです／〜くありません, な-adj → 〜じゃないです／〜ではありません.

1) Basic description — 〜は（形容詞けいようし）です

Use an adjective with です to politely describe a noun.

• この本ほんは おもしろいです。= This book is interesting.
• あの店みせは 安やすいです。= That shop is cheap.
• ここは 静しずかです。= It’s quiet here. (な-adj)
• ミラーさんは 元気げんきです。= Mr. Miller is well/energetic. (な-adj)

Note: Both negative styles are polite. 〜くありません／〜ではありません is slightly more formal.

Use どうですか to ask “How is it?” / “What do you think?” or to make a suggestion (“How about …?”).

• Q: 今日きょうの天気てんきは どうですか。A: ちょっと 寒さむいです。= How’s the weather? — It’s a bit cold.
• Q: 新あたらしいレストランは どうですか。A: とても おいしいです。= How is the new restaurant? — Very tasty.
• Suggestion: コーヒーは どうですか。= How about coffee?

• そして (and/then): このカメラは 軽かるいです。そして 安やすいです。= It’s light, and it’s cheap.
• 〜ですが、〜 (but): このホテルは 便利べんりですが、高たかいです。= It’s convenient, but expensive.

Common Mistakes & Fixes

• × ここは 静しずかいです → ○ ここは 静しずかです（な-adj has no い）
• × 高たかいですじゃない → ○ 高たかくないです（い-adj → くない）
• × 便利べんりくないです → ○ 便利べんりじゃないです（な-adj → じゃない）
• × …です。ですが… → ○ …ですが、…です。
