～は～です
→ Polite “X is Y” sentences for nationality, identity/occupation, and age.
Meaning
Use topic + は + noun/age + です to state who/what someone is, where they are from, or how old they are. It’s the most basic polite way to introduce yourself and describe others.
- は marks the topic; です is the polite copula (“to be”).
- Questions add か; negatives use ではありません / colloquial じゃありません.
- Age uses the counter ～歳 (～さい). Polite “How old?” is おいくつですか.
Form & Variations
Basic: X は Y です Question: X は Y ですか Negative (polite): X は Y ではありません / じゃありません Casual: X は Y だ / じゃない Age: X は N 歳（さい）です Affiliation: A の B です (e.g., ABC大学の先生です)
